Bridget Stehli is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, drawing, textiles, video, installation, sculpture and assemblage. Her practice interrogates the visual language of popular culture, drawing particularly on the kitsch aesthetics of 1970s and 1980s media, B movies, pornography and fandom.
Through humour, appropriation and satire, Stehli explores gender dynamics, spectatorship and the performative aspects of human behaviour. By reworking imagery traditionally shaped by the heterosexual male gaze, her work gives space to alternative ways of looking at subjects that have often been suppressed, marginalised or denigrated.
